What is this tool?

It is an online alternative to Excel's XLOOKUP function. It takes rows from a primary dataset and enriches them by finding matches across designated lookup and return arrays.

Understanding the Settings

Lookup Column

The specific column in your source data to search for your match key.

Return Column

The specific column that contains the data you actually want to pull in. Unlike VLOOKUP, it can be located anywhere (even to the left of your Lookup Column).

If Not Found

Directly mirrors the if_not_found argument. This text will be output if no match exists.

Match Mode = 0

Exact Match. The tool strictly looks for an identical text or number.

Match Mode = 2

Wildcard Match. Allows the use of * (any characters) or ? (any single character) inside your Match Column text.

Search Mode = 1

Searches the table from top to bottom, returning the first match it finds.

Search Mode = -1

Searches the table from bottom to top, returning the very last match in the dataset.

Why is XLOOKUP better than VLOOKUP?

XLOOKUP separates the lookup and return columns, meaning you don't need to count column indexes and your return column can be to the left of your lookup column.

How does Search Mode -1 work?

It performs a reverse search. If you have duplicate entries in your data, it will return the last one (closest to the bottom) instead of the first one.
