What is this tool?

It is an online alternative to Excel's INDEX(..., MATCH(...)) combination. It matches values across two separate arrays, bypassing the limitations of VLOOKUP.

Understanding the Settings

Lookup Column (MATCH)

The column that contains the keys to search. MATCH resolves the relative row number where the key is found.

Return Column (INDEX)

The column that contains the data to return. INDEX uses the row number from MATCH to grab the correct value.

Match Type = 0

Exact Match (Default). Finds the exact match. Returns the first occurrence if duplicates exist.

Match Type = 1

Finds the largest value that is less than or equal to the lookup value. The lookup array MUST be sorted ascending.

Match Type = -1

Finds the smallest value that is greater than or equal to the lookup value. The lookup array MUST be sorted descending.

Why do I need to sort my data for Match Type 1 or -1?

Match types 1 and -1 assume the data is sorted. If it is not sorted correctly, the math behind finding the next smallest or largest value will return entirely incorrect results. We check this before running to protect your data!
