Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about splitting Excel files online

What file formats does the Excel Splitter support?+
Excel Splitter supports XLS (Excel 97-2003), XLSX (Excel 2007+), and CSV (Comma-Separated Values) files. You can upload any of these formats and the tool will detect and parse them automatically.
How many split modes are available?+
We offer 9 split modes: By Fixed Rows (every N rows), By File Count (N equal files), By Sheet (each sheet as separate file), By Column Value (group by a column's values), By Blank Rows (split at empty rows), By File Size (max size limit), By Formula Type (formula vs. value cells), By Custom Expression (your own conditions), and By Date Range (time-based groups).
Are my files uploaded to any server?+
No! All processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device. This makes it safe for confidential business data, financial records, and sensitive personal information.
Is Excel Splitter really free?+
Yes, Excel Splitter is completely free with no hidden fees, no watermarks, no file size limits, and no signup required. You can split as many files as you need.
Are formulas preserved when splitting?+
Yes! Our tool automatically detects Excel formulas in your file and preserves them across all split output files. You can view all detected formulas in the Formulas tab before splitting.
Can I preview my data before splitting?+
Absolutely. After uploading your file, the Data Preview tab shows your data in a formatted table view. You can review column headers, data types, row counts, and statistics before configuring and executing the split.
What happens if my file is very large?+
Since all processing happens locally in your browser, very large files may take longer depending on your device's memory and CPU. We recommend closing other browser tabs to free up resources. Files up to 100MB are generally handled well on modern devices.
Can I apply filters before splitting?+
Yes! The Data Filters panel lets you apply column-based filters to narrow down your data before splitting. You can filter by specific values, ranges, or conditions, and only the filtered data will be included in the split output.
